How to Brew Better V60 Coffee at Home
Asuka Kurita15 April 2026
Brewing with V60 is one of the simplest and most rewarding ways to enjoy specialty coffee at home. It is clean, precise and highlights the unique flavour of the beans you choose. If espresso is about intensity and body, V60 is about clarity and balance. It allows you to taste origin character, sweetness and subtle aromatics with remarkable definition. Whether you are new to pour over or looking to refine your technique, this guide will help you brew consistently great coffee at home.
Why Choose V60?
The V60 is a manual pour over brewer designed to give you control over extraction. Its cone shape and spiral ridges allow water to flow evenly through the coffee bed, producing a cup that is:
- Clean and bright
- Balanced in acidity
- Clear in flavour separation
- Light to medium in body
It is an ideal method for showcasing single origins or medium roast coffees where nuance matters.
What You Will Need
- V60 dripper
- V60 paper filters
- Fresh Bellissimo coffee
- Burr grinder
- Digital scales
- Gooseneck kettle
- Timer
- Mug or Server
Freshly ground coffee is essential. Grinding just before brewing dramatically improves flavour clarity and sweetness.
The Bellissimo Home Recipe
This is a simple starting point that works beautifully across most coffees.
Coffee : 16g
Water : 240g
Ratio : 1:15
Grind : Medium, similar to table salt
Water Temperature : 88 degrees
Total brew time : 1 minutes 45 seconds
Step by Step Brewing Method
1. Rinse the Filter
Place the paper filter into the V60 and rinse thoroughly with hot water. This removes any paper flavour and preheats your dripper and server. Discard the rinse water.
2. Add and Level the Coffee
Add 16g of freshly ground coffee to the filter. Gently shake or tap the dripper to create a flat, even coffee bed.
3. Bloom
Start your timer and pour 32g of water evenly over the coffee grounds. Ensure all the coffee is saturated. Allow it to bloom for 24 to 30 seconds. Blooming releases carbon dioxide trapped during roasting and helps ensure even extraction.
4. Main Pour
After the bloom, begin pouring slowly in steady circular movements. Pour up to 240g straight, allow the water level to rise slightly, but not creating any turbulence or rolling. Keep the pour controlled and avoid pouring directly onto the paper filter.
5. Drawdown
The drawdown should finish between 1:45 and 2:00, with a uniform coffee bed forming a 60 mm wall around the filter once drained. If the brew runs too quickly, grind slightly finer. If it runs too slowly, grind slightly coarser.
How to Adjust for Taste
V60 is very responsive to small changes. If your coffee tastes:
- Sour or underdeveloped: Grind finer or extend brew time slightly.
- Bitter or dry: Grind coarser or shorten brew time.
- Flat or muted: Check water temperature and pouring consistency.
Small adjustments make a big difference.
